This is why you plant apple and crab trees all the way to the graft. There are small roots pushing all the way to the graft and they would be pushing out above if I had planted the tree deeper. ... See MoreSee Less

If you plant above the graft you will have a standard apple tree. That may get 25' tall and 5-10 years till apples appear. Graft should be 4-6" above ground
Don’t you mean this is why you don’t plant that deep?
I have never planted to the graft have I been doing it wrong the whole time?
It's the year of years here in central Pennsylvania for the caterpillar formally known as Gypsy Moth. These little guy's will devour a newly planted tree in days and even cause death. I'm not one to run around and spray my trees but for 6 bucks and 30 minutes I did shake a little SEVIN dust. ... See MoreSee Less

Bt spray works pretty well
We just planted this spring so for several years we will apply granular Merit around the base in early spring. Full year protection from most chewing insects and others. Absorbed up thru the roots for systemic protection. Imidacloprid, common name Merit, Bandit, many others. May have to spray also this year with the young root systems but I use this as a go to for year long protection for many ornamentals also.
They are going to be so bad this year. They were bad last year, but I didn't see nearly as many in the spring as we're seeing now. I expect that we'll see entire ridges and forests defoliated.
I made a little video looking at some blossoms on some of the apples, apple crabs, and crabapples; I also hit a few pears. If Bloom Times interests you, this may be one to watch. An apple tree is not just an apple tree! www.bluehillwildlifenursery.com

Good info! I took some notes. You covered every single tree I have except for sonofcal. How does the bloom time of that tree compare to the others?
Really enjoy your videos Ryan. Very informative!
Love your videos Ryan
I am not sure if Hannah Haines will be a deer hunter, but she is showing me that she will be a farmerβmaybe only a deer farmer, but I will take it! She did very well, as we put a lot of plots in on Sunday.
I have always posted about my small to micro properties, all being 12 acres or less. We have been fortunate to purchase a 75-acre farm. This means more trees grown to go for sale and a lot more posts on the progression of this property regarding trees and wildlife.

I tagged you in one of his podcasts for this a few months ago!
Amazing quality trees. Gotta make more space so I can get more. Not mentioning any names, but I have bought trees online from lots of places, and these are by far the best. Wish I found them sooner.

What is the process to cross pollinate?
It was an hour of family fun, with 40% still holding in central Pennsylvania. I know it's not the Midwest, but many of my better bucks are still holing. (I'll toss a pic of that). ... See MoreSee Less

Great job!
Man I’ve been running trail cameras on my place and I haven’t seen a buck since muzzleloader season. Either they are that depleted in my herd or they dropped early. I believe this one has nuts π
I’m curious, did any certain trees have sheds nearby?
