The Taylor Apple Pear tree for deer is a highly productive, disease-resistant Asian pear selected for wildlife orchards, hunting properties, and homestead plantings. This variety produces crisp, apple-shaped fruit that is great eating for both people and wildlife.

Deer show a strong preference for this pear. In our plantings, they often clean up the fruit quickly as it drops. This makes Taylor Apple Pear an excellent soft mast tree for hunters looking to create a dependable fall food source.

Here in central Pennsylvania, the fruit ripens during September. The pears hang and drop over a period of approximately three weeks, creating a steady attraction.

Deer Attraction and Fruit Production

The Taylor Apple Pear is one of our preferred pear varieties for wildlife. When the fruit begins falling, deer quickly locate the tree and return regularly to feed.

The fruit is slightly smaller than a tennis ball and has the excellent flavor expected from an Asian pear. This combination of taste, production, and timing makes it valuable for both wildlife and people.

Asian pears are especially useful in wildlife plantings because they provide a high-quality fruit source that deer, and other wildlife can enjoy. At the same time, they produce fruit that people can harvest and eat.

Disease Resistance and Tree Performance

The Taylor Apple Pear has been observed in central Pennsylvania for six years and has remained exceptionally clean from common pear diseases.

This tree combines strong growth, reliable fruit production, and excellent disease resistance. Because of these traits, it is a dependable choice for long-term wildlife orchards.

Taylor Apple Pear grows well in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4-7. It is also a great fit for many areas throughout the Midwest and Northeast.

Rootstock and Tree Size

Every Taylor Apple Pear tree is grafted onto Pyrus betulifolia rootstock. This vigorous standard rootstock develops a strong root system and creates a durable, long-lived tree.

The tree will reach a mature height of 20+ feet and can produce large crops for many years. The deep root system also provides excellent anchoring and drought tolerance.

This rootstock performs well in a variety of conditions, including:

• Sandy soils
• Acidic soils
• Lower fertility soils
• Reclaimed food plot areas
• Upland and mountain soils

For best results, we recommend completing a soil test and making the proper amendments before planting.

Pollination Requirements

Like all pear trees, Taylor Apple Pear requires another compatible pear variety for pollination.

For the best fruit production:

• Plant at least two different pear varieties.
• Avoid planting only one variety.
• Select pears with overlapping bloom periods.

Taylor Apple Pear works well with the European-style pear varieties offered by Blue Hill Wildlife Nursery. Kieffer Pear is also an excellent pollination partner.

These two-year-old trees have developed extensive root systems and often feature multiple branches. Each tree is pruned to approximately 66 inches before shipping.

Planting Instructions

Plant Taylor Apple Pear trees in moist, well-drained soil with a pH between 5.8 and 7.0. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily.

For the best establishment:

• Space trees approximately 20 feet apart.
• Protect trees with a minimum 5-foot cage.
• Install a breathable 2-foot by 2-foot weed mat.
• Add approximately 10 gallons of stone around the weed mat.
• Wrap the trunk with aluminum window screen to reduce rodent damage.

Proper protection during the first few years helps your trees establish quickly and protects your investment.

Shipping and Pickup

We ship dormant bare-root trees to Plant Hardiness Zones 2-8 beginning in early March and continuing through the last Monday in April.

You can select your preferred shipping date during checkout. Bare-root trees should be planted while they remain dormant for the best success.

Local pickup is available for customers in Pennsylvania and surrounding states. The last week of March through the first week of April is typically the ideal planting window in Pennsylvania.

Pickup hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
