The Seckel pear is a very sweet variety, also known as the sugar pear, for a good reason. The tree produces fruit in clusters annually and falls free from the tree for me pretty much the entire month of September in central Pennsylvania. It exhibits some resistance to fire blight and good resistance to most common pear diseases. I use this pear to condition my deer, as its high sugar content has them cleaning all the pears up every day. The tree is suitable for plant hardiness zones 4b-8 and will reach a mature height of 20’+.

SECKEL PEAR
The Seckel pear is a very sweet variety, also known as the sugar pear, for a good reason. The tree produces fruit in clusters annually and falls free from the tree for me pretty much the entire month of September in central Pennsylvania. It exhibits some resistance to fire blight and good resistance to most common pear diseases. I use this pear to condition my deer, as its high sugar content has them cleaning them up every day. The tree is suitable for plant hardiness zones 4b-8 and will reach a mature height of 20’+.
The Seckel Pear is produced by using plant tissue from the original tree and grafting it onto new roots. This essentially provides you with an identical tree to the one depicted in the picture and description.
TREE SIZE
2-yr 4-6′ (5/8” dia.) These two-year-old trees will have an extensive root system and will have multiple branches with a diameter of 5/8” or greater. We will be pruning the trees back to a shipping height of 66” with the roots shipping. Our largest box is 66″x 14″x 15″ and will hold 15 of the 2-year trees.
2-yr 4-6′ (select): These two old trees will be the largest available. They will be feathered and have our greatest diameter towards that 3/4”. We will prune the trees back to a shipping height of 66″ with the roots, as our largest box is 66 “x 14″ x 15” and will hold 14 select two-year-old trees. Free local pick-up is available in the surrounding states of Pennsylvania.
STANDARD ROOTSTOCK
Seckel pear is grafted to Pyrus Betulifolia. This vigorous, standard-sized seedling rootstock will reach a mature height of 20′-30′. Therefore, it will produce more fruit on the tree and take up less real estate.
This root is adaptable to acidic soils, poor soil conditions, sandy soils, and soil with low fertility. As a result, it will be suitable for more marginal areas that were previously wooded and are now used as food plots, reclaimed land, shale mountain soil, drier uplands, and sandy soils. With that said, this rootstock will perform exceptionally well when planted in soils with an appropriate pH and rich in nutrients.
You should perform a soil test and make the correct amendments to your soil for optimal growth and fruit production, as low fertility will cause a delay in fruit production. The roots will anchor well, producing a solid and drought-tolerant tree because of the deep “real roots”. We are only grafting onto the most vigorous standard rootstock. This rootstock is suitable for plant zones 4b – 8.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR SECKEL PEAR
Plant at least two different pear varieties near each other to ensure pollination. The varieties of grafted pears we have for sale will bloom and overlap, providing excellent pollination. The Kieffer pear tree is an excellent pollinator for both Asian and European pear varieties.
Plant all pear trees in moist, well-drained soil with a soil pH between 5.5 and 7.2 with adequate nutrient levels for optimal growth. The above soil conditions will provide the most growth and fruit production. Pears are one fruit tree that tolerates acidic soils with poor fertility. Seckel pears require at least 6 hours of sunlight for fruit production and growth. Space trees 20′ apart and use cages of at least 5′ to protect your trees. This will ensure your deer eat your fruit in a few years, not your trees this year.
