This grafted pear tree, named Marble Hill, originates from North Central Vermont. This stand-alone pear tree produces a medium to large Comice-type pear with a complex, smooth, creamy flavor. The original pear tree resides in zone 4, where temperatures range from -25 to -30 each year, yet it bears heavily and annually without another pear tree in sight for miles. My Deer gobble these down as fast as they fall. The tree doesn’t produce until year 4 or 5, depending on your soil, but after that, the production is outstanding every year.
Marble Hill drops free from the tree in September and into October, with a majority dropping during September here in central Pa. This tree has wide spreading limbs and will reach heights of up to 30′ tall, and has remained very clean with no blight seen. This tree is simply a solid producer, producing annually even at -25 to -30 temperatures, making it an excellent choice for northern climates. This tree will reach a mature height of 20’+. Plant Hardiness zones 4 – 7

This zone 4 pear tree is simply a solid producer and does so annually even as it receives -25 to -30 temperatures yearly. All of these qualities make Marble Hill one of the best pear trees for zone 4, and they are ideal for feeding deer in areas such as Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Northern Michigan. STANDARD ROOTSTOCK (Pyrus Betulifolia)
Marble Hill pear is grafted to Pyrus Betulifolia. This vigorous, standard-sized seedling rootstock will reach a mature height of 20′-30′. Therefore, it will produce more fruit on the tree and take up less real estate.
This root is adaptable to acidic soils, poor soil conditions, sandy soils, and soil with low fertility. As a result, it will be suitable for more marginal areas that were wooded and are now food plots, reclaimed land, shale mountain soil, dryer uplands, and sandy soils. With that said, this rootstock will perform exceptionally well when planted in appropriate pH and nutrient-rich soils!
You should perform a soil test and make the correct amendments to your soil for optimal growth and fruit production, as low fertility will cause a delay in fruit production. The roots will anchor well, producing a solid and drought-tolerant tree because of the deep “real roots”. We are only grafting onto the most vigorous standard rootstock. This rootstock is suitable for plant zones 4b – 8.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
Plant at least 2 different pear varieties within close proximity to each other to ensure pollination. The varieties of grafted pears we have for sale will blossom and overlap each other giving you excellent pollination. The Danville Kieffer pear tree is an excellent pollinator for both Asian and European varieties of pears.
Plant all pear trees in moist, well drained soil with a soil ph between 5.5 – 7.2 with adequate nutrient levels for optimal growth. The above soil conditions will provide the most growth and fruit production. Pears are one fruit tree which will also tolerate acidic soils with poor fertility. A fruit tree requires at least 6 hours of sunlight for fruit production and growth. Space trees 20′ apart and use cages of at least 5’ to protect your trees. This will ensure your deer eat your fruit in a few years and not your trees this year.
