Rusty’s Favorite™ Apple
Rusty’s Favorite™ is a grafted cultivar that is extremely productive apple tree with a drop period from mid September through mid October. There are more than 1,000 wild apple trees growing on and around his property and a tree like Rusty’s favorite sets itself apart by being one of a kind. The Rusty’s Favorite™ apple is made by using plant tissue from the original tree and attaching it to the new roots. This essentially is giving you an identical tree, of the one you see in the picture and description.
TREE SIZE
2-3′ ( 3/8” dia.) These trees will have a good root system. They will be whips around 3′ high with a trunk diameter of 3/8”.
3-5′ ( 1/2” dia.) These trees will have a good root system with some possible branching but will mainly be whips. They will range in height between 3′ to 5′ with a trunk diameter of around a 1/2”.
4-6′ (+ 1/2” dia.) These trees will have an extensive root system and typically having multiple branches but many will be solid whips. They will range in height between 4′ and 6′ with a trunk diameter of 1/2” to 3/4”.
2-yr 4-6′ (5/8”-3/4” dia.) These two-year-old trees will have an extensive root system and can have multiple branches with a diameter of 5/8” and greater. We will be pruning the trees back to a shipping height of 66” with the roots. Our largest box is 66″x 14″x 15″ and will hold 15 of the 2-yr trees. Free local pick-up is open to the surrounding states of Pennsylvania.
2-yr 4-6′ (select): These two old trees will be the largest available. They will be feathered and have our greatest diameter towards that 3/4”. We will prune the trees back to a shipping height of 66″ with the roots, as our largest box is 66 “x 14″ x 15” and will hold 14 select two-year-old trees. Free local pick-up is available in the surrounding states of Pennsylvania.
ROOTSTOCK FOR RUSTY’S FAVORITE APPLE™
This grafted tree is attached to a standard, cold hardy, and vigorous root. This rootstock is an excellent choice for wildlife trees because it produces a full-size 20′ to 30′ tree. Producing a full-size tree for wildlife means much more fruit on a given tree. A full-size root also extends the life of your tree as it does not restrict the growth.
This rootstock develops deep roots, making it exceptionally well anchored. Therefore, it is also highly drought-tolerant. These roots penetrate well into the subsoil, pulling up lost nutrients. Therefore, this rootstock is an excellent all-around rootstock for wildlife plantings. Rusty’s Favorite Apple™ is very precocious, with many trees producing quickly even when grafted onto a standard root.
POLLINATION FOR RUSTY’S FAVORITE APPLE™
Plant at least one apple, apple crab, or crabapple variety near each other for pollination. Grams Gift crabapple, which blooms for a very long period, makes an excellent pollinator for apples and crabapples.
You want to plant different named trees within the apple family for pollination. Therefore, you need to mix the names of the grafted trees when planting, as trees with the same name are genetically identical and, most times, do not pollinate each other.
Picture that bee leaving one tree and hitting the next one. You want that bee to land on a tree blossom with a different name. Trees in the apple family flower over about 14 days, with each tree blooming for around 7 to 10 days. Rusty’s Favorite Apple™ blooms mid-season, therefore providing plenty of pollination to early and late-season trees and receiving plenty.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR RUSTY’S FAVORITE APPLE™
Plant all apples and crabapples in moist, well-drained soil with a pH between 5.8 and 7. This soil should have adequate nutrient levels for optimal growth and fruit production.
If you have not completed a soil test, click here to improve your soil. Many products can supply your tree with the two most essential nutrients: phosphorus and potassium. However, adjust these nutrients when planting your tree or the prior year, as the soil two feet into the earth has never had any amendments, and these two nutrients are not very mobile.
Per a soil test, if your soil pH is lower than recommended, you can adjust it by mixing a few handfuls of pelletized lime into your soil when planting.
Rusty’s Favorite™ Apple requires 6 hours of sunlight for growth and fruit production. Space trees 20′ apart and use at least 5′ cages to protect your trees. This process will ensure your deer eat your fruit in a few years, not your trees this year.
We also recommend wrapping an aluminum window screen around the base of your tree, using a 2’x 2′ breathable weed mat, and adding 10 gallons of stone to that weed mat.

Shipping to Plant Hardiness zones 2 – 8 will begin in early March (you select your ship date) and continue until the last Monday in April. Dormant bare-root trees must be planted in the spring, while trees in your area remain dormant. You can select your ship date when you check out on the website. The last week in March or the first week in April is perfect for planting in Pennsylvania. Free local pick-up is also available in the surrounding states. Rusty’s Favorite apple is grafted to a standard root that is extremely cold, hardy, and vigorous. This Rootstock is an excellent choice for wildlife trees because it produces a full-size 20’ to 30’ tree. Producing a full-size tree for wildlife means much more fruit on a given tree. This rootstock will develop deep ”Real roots” making it exceptionally well anchored, penetrating well into the subsoil, pulling up lost nutrients, and making it very drought tolerant. This root is a great all-around rootstock for wildlife plantings.
This standard-size rootstock is adaptable to many soil types and conditions, especially when planted in less desirable locations. Therefore, with its full vigor, can be used in areas that were once wooded and are now food plots, reclaimed land, shale mountain soil, dryer uplands, and ridges. This standard rootstock will also perform well in improved soil in an orchard-style setting. We are only grafting onto the most vigorous roots in a given year. When grafting onto the top 30% of seedlings, you get a rootstock about 40% more vigorous tree than many clonal stocks used for wildlife trees today. Rusty’s Favorite apple is very precocious, with many trees producing very quickly anon this standard root making it an all-around excellent rootstock for wildlife plantings.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR RUSTY’S FAVORITE APPLE™
Plant at least 1 different apple or crabapple varieties within close proximity for pollination. Grams Gift, Dolgo Crabapple and Enterprise apple make excellent pollinator for Rusty’s Favorite™ apple. Plant all apples and crabapples in moist, well drained soil with a soil pH between 5.8 – 7 with adequate nutrient levels for optimal growth.
If you have not completed a soil test click here and improved your soil I would highly recommend doing so. However, if you are not going to I would recommend mixing 1 ounce for every 3 sq ft of 0-20-20 granular fertilizer in your soil at the time of planting. The first number tells you percentage of nitrogen contained in the fertilizer. Nitrogen applied directly to the roots of the tree will cause death to your tree, make sure the first number is zero.
Nitrogen is very mobile in the soil and you can apply a small of nitrogen the following year. The 2nd and 3rd numbers are Phosphorus and Potassium. Apply these two nutrients at or well before the time of planting, because they are basically immobile in the soil, they will need mixed in through the soil. We recommend completing a soil test and making amendments for best results. We recommend applying 1 lb of 10-10-10 for every inch of diameter in the spring the following year and each year after planting.
Rusty’s Favorite™ Apple requires a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight for growth and fruit production. Space trees 20′ apart and use cages of at least 5’ to protect your trees. This will ensure your deer eat your fruit in a few years and not your trees this year.

Returns: We have been shipping plants around the country for quite some time now. We provide
healthy live plants. We take every effort to ensure that your plants are packed in a way that
maintains that health as they arrive to you. We can not be responsible for how plants are handled
when they leave our care or are handled by customers.
Tree care: If you plant your tree up on high dry ground they may need watered through the first
summer, if you plant too low and wet your trees may drown. Be careful of the herbicide you may
use around the tree (read the label). I want you and your trees to succeed but if you don't tube or
cage them the deer will eat your tree that night.
Hours: We do not keep regular hours. If you would like to visit the nursery, just call, send a
message or email. Anyone is more than welcome.
Selected pickup dates: Trees can be picked up in the spring as soon as you can dig in your soil.
Trees need to be picked by the end of April. Before picking up, please contact us letting us know
when you are planning to come so we can have your order ready for you when you arrive.
Shipping: When buying grafted trees, depending on the amount of trees you order will determine
the size box the trees will be shipped in. If you order 8 or fewer two-year-old trees, they will fit into a 66''x10''x10'' box. Ordering 9 to 16 two-year-old trees will fit into a 66''x15''x14'' box. Ordering 16 or more two year old trees will fill into 2 or more boxes, depending on the total amount of trees bought. Trees may need to be professionally pruned to fit in these boxes. Ship dates will be selected by you before completing you order. We ship trees from early March to late April. You should select a ship date that is suitable for the location you are planting your trees. Trees will ship through UPS on Monday’s, Tuesday’s, and Wednesday’s.
You will receive an email notification when your trees ship. When trees arrive, plant as soon as possible. If you cannot, it
would be best to heal them into soil or store in a cool place not allowing roots to freeze but not
allowing the trees to become warm.
If Tree Tube products are the only items you purchase then they will ship as soon as the order is
received. You may have to select a ship date but I can assure you if you are just ordering tree
tubes they will ship immediately. If Tree Tube products are purchased with trees, then they will
ship with the trees.
Due to the cost of shipping there will be a minimum of 4 trees that have to be purchased in order
for checkout to occur. Due to phytosanitary regulations, we do not ship to California. We also do not ship chestnut trees to Washington, Florida or Oregon State. Trees will be packaged correctly to meet the shipping requirements for Idaho and all other states.

The Liberty apple tree is a fast-growing grafted apple tree that is probably the most widely planted standard-size apple tree for deer. This tree has excellent disease resistance and produces heavy crops of apples and does so annually. The Liberty apple tree is a vigorous, fast-growing apple tree immune to most common diseases, including apple scab and cedar apple rust—the fruit from Liberty Apple drops from September through October in the NorthEast. The fruit texture is mealy with a good apple flavor, making it one that the deer go after when you only have teeth on the bottom in the front of your mouth. This grafted tree produces a standard size apple. Keener Seedling also know as (Rusty Coat) , originated in Lincoln County, NC. around 1880. Keener Seedling has proven to be an exceptional apple for the North, growing well into Zone 4b.
The apple is medium in size, sweet and firm. This grafted tree is productive, vigorous and very disease resistant. In a no spray situation I have seen good resistance to apple scab, cedar apple rust, powdering mildew and fireblight. It ripens extremely late and can hold on to the tree into December. Keener Seedling has an early bloom with a late ripening period typically hold and drops in late October/December. The RubyRush™ apple is a cross between two popular apple trees widely planted for wildlife Enterprise and Goldrush apple. This apple tree has excellent resistance to apple scab, FireBlight, and Cedar Apple rust in a no-spray situation. This apple is one of the best and most widely planted apple trees for wildlife. This grafted apple tree is vigorous and very productive, as it produces annually. In a no-spray situation, the enterprise apple tree is immune to apple scab and highly resistant to cedar-apple rust, Fireblight, and powdery mildew. This tree ripens at a perfect time during October and continues dropping apples into November in the Northeast. Here in central Pennsylvania, the peak of fruit dropping occurs in Mid to late October. This grafted tree is one of the latest ripening apples. GoldRush apple ripens in late October through mid-November, yet hang well and won’t be dropping much until you receive a hard freeze. This grafted apple tree produces a sweet and very edible three-inch apple. As you can see in the pictures of the original Big Ten™, this tree is immaculate in a no-spray situation, with all major apple tree diseases heavily present within the immediate area. The fruit ripens and falls free from the tree from late October through the month of November here in the north. The vigor is good, and the tree seems pretty precocious, as seen in the picture of a freshly planted one setting a good amount of fruit. Big Ten is upright and has weeping limbs from carrying massive fruit loads through the years. The original tree stands in Plant hardiness zone 4b, but this tree has seen -35 in its lifetime, making it suitable for plant hardiness zones 4-7. The Wild Apple Trees for sale will produce an edible apple typically 2'' - 3'' in diameter, although I have seen many of these pop apple crabs around that 2'' mark. These wild apple trees will resemble those growing around old farmsteads and in fence rows here in the Northeast. This grafted apple will give you a tree with excellent disease resistance and an abundance of apples at a very young age. In a no-spray situation, Arkansas black apple has shown extreme resistance to apple scab, cedar apple rust, and fireblight. I have seen some powdery mildew in a situation where moisture is excessive, like in a tree tube. I have never had an issue when growing a tree in a fence. It's an early-producing standard-sized apple with a great taste. This tree will begin dropping in late October and continue through November, with a few lingering into December. The main drop here in Pennsylvania occurs in the first three weeks of November. These apples are great for fresh eating out of hand during this time. The apple is crisp, has a great juicy flavor, and is one of my favorites. Arkansas Black is a very productive apple tree, producing a great apple annually. Big Lou™ Crab is easily one of the most unusual and unique trees I have ever encountered. This grafted tree is a heavy annual producer of a 2" apple crab that holds and drops a portion of its fruit during November, December, and January here in Pennsylvania. Big Lou™ Crab drops the most fruit during December and January but will retain enough fruit to continue to drop a few well into February if the wildlife doesn't have it cleaned off. Big Lou™ Crab has a very unusual taste. It takes on a nutty yet pear-like flavor in the middle of winter. The pictures and video of this tree make it easy to see that Big Lou is a Whitetail's favorite treat in late fall and winter. Unlike most other fruits, the fruit holds its integrity, even after being frozen and thawed many times. In the pictures of Big Lou's fruit, you can see that the flesh of this fruit is still firm and intact in the middle of January. Fruit integrity like this is necessary if you like to hunt in Pennsylvania's late hunting season in January or many other states throughout the Northeast or the Midwest. The original tree resides in North Western Pennsylvania in plant hardiness zone 5a. Big Lou exhibits no sign of Apple Scab, Powdery Mildew, or Fireblight but only has moderate resistance to CAR in the north. The original tree has seen a sub-zero temperature of -24 that would place its resilience well into plant hardiness zone 4. Plant Hardiness zones 4b - 7. Mature height of 20'+
Some trees can produce fruit each year as sure as the sun comes up tomorrow, and Turning Point™ is just one of those trees. This grafted apple crab produces heavy crops of giant crabs to 2"+ sweet apples annually that hold well to the tree and drop from Mid-October well on through winter. A good portion of this fruit will fall during Late October and into November for most of the country's northern half. If you're like me, you want your property to peak in November. I like that the Turning Point™ tree ripens unevenly and gives me a substantial drop during a pivotal point in buck movement in November here in the NorthEast. Turning point™ apple is a Late-season apple by the sheer fact that it produces so much that the drop continues well into winter. This apple tree shows strong resistance to C.A.R, Apple Scab, powdery mildew, and fireblight here in the Northeast.
Turning Point™ is a tree that does not ripen at the same time. A huge bonus! This tree will have deer looking for its sweet-tasting fruit in October as apples start falling. This grafted apple is a very productive tree that produces apples a year sooner than some of the other very popular disease-resistant apple varieties. Freedom is resistant to apple scab, cedar apple rust, powdery mildew, and fireblight. The tree you see in the picture is the same tree I use for my grafted trees. Lockdown Crab™ is an apple crab and is a new cultivar to the Wildlife Management World. Actually, a new apple to the World and is a product of natural selection.
This grafted apple produces heavy crops of 2”+ fruit and drops most of its fruit during November and a few continuing into December. When planted in an area where it blooms from early to mid-May in the north, Lockdown Crab™ will ripen and begin to drop in late October, with the main drop during that important mid-November period. If you are planting below the 40th parallel north, I'm sure you will see this drop time shift and become a few weeks earlier as you go south of this location. Lockdown produces fruit annually and does its job well. I've known this tree for three fruiting seasons, and it has not failed to fruit in those three years.
This sweet apple is heavy bearing and an annual producer. It also shows resistance to C.A.R., Apple Scab, Powdery Mildew, and Fireblight in the Northeast.

Candy Crab™ is a 2" apple crab or an apple with a complex flavor and finishes with a delightful sweetness. I have tasted loads of wild apples and domesticated apples in my travels but never one such as this. The fruit belongs in a grocery store not being planted for deer. It is the best apple I have ever had the pleasure to eat. In my pictures, this crab is heavily loaded every year, yet it still has a nice size to it.
This apple crab is also a product of natural selection by nature that has never been sprayed and is growing wild in North Western Pennsylvania in plant hardiness zone 5a. This tree fully ripens and is a heavy producer. It begins to drop about October 1st and continues to do so well into late November with a constant steady pace here in Pennsylvania.
Candy Crab™ is among a few 1,000 wild crabs growing within the same vicinity yet is exhibiting no signs of C.A.R, Scab, Powdery Mildew, or Fireblight here in the Northeast present in this area. During the polar vortex of 1994, Candy Crab would have experienced temperatures typically seen in plant hardiness zone 4a. Yet, it is still standing here today, making this crab very suitable for zone 4b and maybe even below.
The name Candy Crab™ fits this new cultivar perfectly, and I see it being sold well beyond the use for wildlife. If you like to eat apples, you would be crazy not to have a Candy Crab™ planted behind the house or on the way to your stand. Mature height will be 20+. Plant Hardiness zones 4b -7.
