Overview

The FallRush™ Pear is a Grafted highly productive, disease-resistant wildlife pear that produces abundant crops of medium-sized fruit during October in central Pennsylvania as seen in the pictures. Deer show an exceptional preference for this pear, often visiting the tree every evening while fruit is falling.

The fruit is the perfect size for both wildlife and the table. It is large enough to make an excellent eating pear, yet small enough that the tree can support heavy annual crops without excessive limb breakage. If you’re looking for a dependable October pear that attracts deer and produces consistently year after year, the FallRush™ Pear deserves a place in your wildlife orchard.

Every FallRush™ Pear is propagated by taking plant tissue from the original tree and grafting it onto new rootstock. This process produces a genetically identical tree, allowing you to grow the same variety featured in our photos and described on this page.

Deer Attraction

One of the greatest strengths of the FallRush™ Pear is its ability to draw deer during the heart of the hunting season. Here in central Pennsylvania, deer consistently feed beneath this tree throughout October. When fruit begins to fall, it quickly becomes one of the preferred feeding locations on the property.

The fruit provides an excellent food source for deer and many other wildlife species. At the same time, it offers outstanding eating quality for the landowner. Having deer on fruit when you hold some bachelor groups on your property gives you an advantage to harvest them first, as trees such as FallRush™ pear put them at a specific location at a specific time.

FallRush™ Pear Tree Fruit Production

FallRush™ Pear produces abundant crops every year. The fruit size allows the tree to carry heavy loads without excessive limb damage, resulting in dependable annual production.

The original tree has demonstrated exceptional health and productivity for many years. As shown in the photos, it continues to produce clean, high-quality fruit with remarkable consistency.

Disease Resistance and Hardiness

The FallRush™ Pear has remained exceptionally clean and healthy while producing heavy annual crops here in central Pennsylvania for what I would estimate to be 70 years. Its dependable performance makes it an outstanding choice for wildlife orchards and long-term habitat improvement projects.

This variety is well suited for USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4b-7 and will develop into a large standard pear tree reaching 35+ feet at maturity.

FallRush™ Tree Size

2-Year Tree (4-6 Feet, 5/8-Inch Diameter)

These two-year-old trees have developed extensive root systems and often feature multiple branches with a trunk diameter of at least 5/8 inch. Before shipping, we prune each tree to approximately 66 inches for safe delivery.

Our Select trees are the largest grade we offer. They typically have superior feathering and trunk diameters approaching 3/4 inch.

Standard Rootstock

FallRush™ Pear is grafted onto Pyrus betulifolia rootstock. This vigorous, standard-sized rootstock develops a deep, powerful root system and produces a long-lived tree with outstanding drought tolerance.

Unlike dwarf rootstocks, this vigorous rootstock produces a full-size wildlife pear capable of carrying heavy fruit crops for decades.

It performs exceptionally well in:

• Acidic soils
• Sandy soils
• Lower fertility soils
• Reclaimed land
• Former woodland
• Shale and upland soils

Although it adapts well to difficult sites, it performs even better when planted in fertile soil with the proper pH.

For the best growth and fruit production, perform a soil test before planting and make the recommended soil amendments. This rootstock is suitable for USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4-7.

Pollination

Like all pear trees, FallRush™ Pear requires another compatible pear variety for pollination.

For the best fruit production:

• Plant at least two different named pear varieties
• Avoid planting trees with the same variety name next to each other as they are genetically the same.
• Select varieties with overlapping bloom periods, all our pears at Blue Hill have overlapping blooms
• Kieffer Pear is an excellent pollination partner.

Think of a bee leaving one blossom and landing on another pear tree blossom with a different name. That simple flight transfers pollen and helps both trees produce abundant fruit.

Planting Instructions for FallRush™ Pear Tree

Plant FallRush™ Pear in moist, well-drained soil with a pH between 5.8 and 7.0. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

Before planting, perform a soil test whenever possible. Phosphorus and potassium move slowly through the soil, so incorporate these nutrients before or during planting for the best results.

If your soil pH is low, mix pelletized lime into the backfill according to your soil test recommendations.

For the best success:

• Space trees approximately 20 feet apart.
• Protect each tree with a minimum 5-foot tree cage.
• Install a breathable 2-foot × 2-foot weed mat.
• Cover the weed mat with approximately 10 gallons of stone and place 2 gallon of stone under the mat.
• Wrap the trunk with aluminum window screen to discourage rodent damage.

These simple steps help your trees establish quickly while protecting them during the critical early years.

Shipping

We ship dormant bare-root trees to USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 2-8 beginning in early March and continuing through the last Monday in April.

You need to select your preferred shipping date during checkout. Because bare-root trees are best planted during your dormant season, Select a date so that you are planting just before spring green up happens in your area and your ground is not frozen.

Local Pickup

The last week of March through the first week of April generally provides the best planting conditions in Pennsylvania.

Free local pickup is available for customers in Pennsylvania and the surrounding states. Simply choose your preferred pickup date during checkout. If your plans change, contact us and we’ll gladly arrange another appointment.
