The Burr Oak (Quercus macrocarpa), also known as Blue Oak, Mossy Overcup Oak, Prairie Oak, and Scrub oak, has the largest acorns of all native oaks, a long life span, very low tannin levels, and can thrive in many soil conditions. Being from the white oak family, the Burr Oak has large acorns with a “fuzzy” cap that taste great to whitetails, turkeys, and other wildlife because of their low tannin levels. The highly adaptable Burr Oak can be planted in and thrive in almost any soil you want to throw it in. It handles drought, cold, and poor soil better than any other oak tree.
A key feature of Burr Oak trees from Bluehill Wildlife Nursery is the fact that our trees will be 3-4 years old when you pick them up, or they arrive at your door….only 6-7 years away from producing acorns! Planted in better soil conditions, the Burr Oak can start producing in 10 years, dropping in October and November. The tree gets very large and wide and can have a 300-year life span, making a great shade tree for future generations to enjoy also. The Burr Oak can be added to your wildlife plantings for variety to attract and hold whitetail and other wildlife to your property, used in restoration projects, or simply planted as beautiful shade trees for your home and family.
Planting Zones 3-9, Soil pH 4.5-7.2, Mature Height 40’-100.’
Burr Oak is available for shipment or pickup after mid-March. Please select accordingly on the calendar at checkout.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR BURR OAK
Plant at least two Burr oak trees nearby for pollination or another variety of white oak (Quercus family). Swamp white oak and English oak would both be suitable pollination partners. A minimum of 30′ for tree spacing when planting Oaks. They can grow in various soil types, but I recommend avoiding wet areas. These trees are tolerant of low pH and low fertility, but, as with any tree, when you raise fertility by providing adequate nutrients, they can produce even faster than I stated above. Requires at least 6 hours of full sun.
