Test first

Soil fertility is complex and site-specific. The best answer for your ground comes from a soil test — many university extensions and labs (e.g., Penn State’s Agricultural Analytical Services Lab) offer economical testing. Commercial growers use test results alongside published guidelines like Penn State’s “Soil Test Recommendations for Tree Fruits.” Test where you intend to plant, then amend to the recommendations.

Target pH

  • Aim for a soil pH of 5.8–7.0 for apples and crabapples (mildly acidic to neutral); most of our fruit trees do well in this range. Oaks/chestnuts tolerate somewhat lower pH.
  • If your pH is low, mix pelletized lime into the planting soil (Ryan uses ~2 lb / “two handfuls” per 2′×2′ hole). Don’t overdo it.

Understanding fertilizer numbers (N-P-K)

The three numbers are Nitrogen – Phosphorus – Potassium:

  • Nitrogen (1st number): drives leafy growth. It is mobile in soil. Never apply nitrogen directly to the roots at planting — it will kill the tree. The first number should be 0 (or slow-release like Osmocote) at planting.
  • Phosphorus (2nd) & Potassium (3rd): critical for roots, fruiting, and vigor. They are immobile in soil, so they must be mixed in at or before planting to reach the root zone.

Why Starter Fertilizer Matters at Planting

Unlike nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium move very slowly through the soil. Young fruit trees require relatively large amounts of both nutrients while they establish their root systems. Once the tree reaches maturity, however, nitrogen usually becomes the primary nutrient needed each year.

For that reason, the best time to apply phosphorus and potassium is when you plant the tree. Mixing a quality tree starter fertilizer into the backfill soil places these nutrients directly within reach of the developing roots. If you simply spread phosphorus and potassium on the soil surface after planting, it can take years for those nutrients to move down to the root zone where the tree can use them. This behavior of phosphorus in particular is well established in soil science.

The ideal application rate depends on your existing soil. A soil test will tell you exactly how much phosphorus and potassium your planting site needs before you add fertilizer. Soil testing is also the best way to avoid applying nutrients that are already present in adequate amounts.

At planting

  • If you haven’t soil tested, mix 1 oz of 0-20-20 per 3 sq ft into the soil (apples/crabs), or ~2–3 oz per 2′×2′ hole (“season it like a steak”). Mix thoroughly through the backfill soil.
  • Optional micronutrient boost: a spade-shovel-full of chicken manure mixed through the pile; wood chips help break up clay.

When to fertilize established fruit trees (Pennsylvania timing)

The optimal window is late winter to early spring, with an optional second feeding after bloom:

  • Late winter–early spring (before/at bud swell): supports new shoots, blossoms, and roots. Wait until about a week before your last frost date so tender new growth isn’t frosted.
  • Shortly after bloom: a second application can aid fruit set and early growth.
  • Early summer (after fruit set): light nitrogen side-dress only if growth is weak.
  • Avoid late-summer/fall fertilizing: it pushes tender growth that won’t harden off before winter and can be killed by cold.

Special rule for persimmons

Persimmons like nitrogen to grow but not to fruit, and they fruit on new spring wood:

  • Never fertilize persimmons in fall — unhardened growth dies back at first frost (critical outside their native range).
  • Fertilize in spring, first 3–4 years only, to push a big tree; then stop or feed very lightly. Over-feeding an established persimmon makes it drop fruit and just grow wood.
