Pollination Explained

Getting pollination right is the difference between a tree that fruits heavily and one that barely produces. Here’s how it works by species.

The golden rule for the apple family

Apples, applecrabs, and crabapples need a different named variety blooming nearby to set fruit. These are all in the same family for pollination; they just produce different-sized fruits.

  • Two trees of the same name are genetically identical (clones) and generally will NOT pollinate each other. Mixing quantities of the same variety doesn’t help — you must mix the names.
  • Picture a bee leaving one blossom and landing on a tree with a different name — that’s the cross-pollination you need.
  • All the crabapples we sell are white-flowering, aside from Ed’s Crazy Crab, and are great pollinators for apples and applecrabs. Great dedicated pollinators: Grams Gift™ (very long bloom — an ideal universal pollinator), Golden Hornet, great for Midseason, and Chestnut Crab work well for early varieties like Dolgo.
  • Some crabs are self-fertile (e.g., Grams Gift™, Dolgo, Kerr, Prime Time, Road Kill Crab™), but even these fruit better with a partner and serve as pollinators for the rest of the block.

Bloom overlap & the “warm-day” window

Fruit trees in the same family flower over roughly a 10–14-day period, with each individual tree blooming for ~7–10 days. Pollination really happens when you get a couple of 70°F days with bees actively flying. To make sure you capture those days:

  • Plant a mix of early-, mid-, and late-blooming varieties so that something is always open during the warm window. 90% of apples can really cover that flowering period, as there is always overlap. I do have a few exceptions that want to make up their own flowering group, but still there’s enough blossoms lingering to pollinate the exceptions.
  • Cluster different names near each other, so bees move between them.

Pear pollination

All the pears we sell bloom and overlap in about a 10-day period, so any mix of our pears pollinates one another. Planting more than one named pear variety gives the best Fruit set.

The same applies to pears as was written above for the apple family.

Persimmons (dioecious)

Persimmons have separate male and female trees, and only females fruit.

  • Grafted persimmons from Blue Hill are named American female varieties and set reliably without fertilization (treat as reliable fruiters for planning). Yes, you could plant a stand-alone tree.
  • American seedling persimmons are a mix of sexes — plant in groups of 6–10 to ensure females; our seedlings come from female-weighted seed called BH Hoosier to raise female odds. Male seedlings can be bark-grafted over to a female later. I run 60/40 in my BH Hoosier plantings, with females on the heavy side.

Chestnuts & oaks pollination (plant in numbers)

  • Chestnuts require cross-pollination — plant two or more (ideally many) near each other for good nut set. Any two that we sell will do the job.
  • Oaks also produce best when planted near other oaks. Plant in groups.

Plums, cherries, peaches

Several are self-fertile (e.g., NY9® plum, Stardust™ cherry, Glohaven peach), but a second variety of a different name within the same species improves set and adds bloom-time diversity. European plums in particular benefit from a partner.

Practical pollination checklist

  • [ ] Apple family: at least two different names within bee range; include a long-blooming pollinator (Grams Gift™).
  • [ ] Mix early/mid/late bloomers to catch the warm-day window.
  • [ ] Pears: plant 2+ varieties (all overlap).
  • [ ] Persimmons: grafted females fruit reliably; seedlings in groups of 6–10.
  • [ ] Chestnuts/oaks: plant in numbers, near their own kind; all will fruit.
  • [ ] Don’t rely on multiples of a single clone to pollinate itself.
